Designed for UNITE Group, this scheme provides 87 student apartments, concierge, communal lounge, laundry, IT suite and rooftop terraced gardens. The design takes advantage of the parkside location and the placement of a new communal amenity.
Newington Court comprises three elements: two buildings and a hinged vertical circulation core. An interpretation of the Victorian villa forms a transition element, set within a light well, made up of studio rooms at all levels. The linking circulation element is fully glazed, and a ‘light’ third form, wrapped in a woven aluminium mesh, reflects the weave of the surrounding landscape.
The woven pattern is derived from an interpretation of the shadow and shimmering of foliage. During winter and at night, the backlit weave creates an undulating screen providing a dramatic play of exterior façade and interior activity further animating the surrounding spaces. The light structure floats above the ground allowing views from the building through to the landscaped courtyard and beyond.
The building is highly sustainable, incorporating a variety of measures ranging from preserving indigenous species, use of biomass, sustainable transport and rainwater recycling. The scheme design achieved an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating.
