Stockwool has delivered a high-quality housing project for new and younger families, on the edge of Surrey, close to Merstham train station. The development has been designed to add character to the area, and the palette of materials and detailing have been developed with reference to the site setting. The building typologies aim to reinforce the character of the different parts of the development – the coach houses define the entrances to the parking courtyards, the larger-scale townhouses flank the main road along the edge of the development and the taller apartment building relates to the new community and retail centre, which borders the southern end of the site.
The project delivers 33 houses and 17 flats at the site located within the Merstham Estate in Surrey. The regeneration of the wider estate has created the opportunity to design a housing development that focuses on providing new homes to suit the longer-term needs of the area, as well as a legacy of high-quality housing that will stand the test of time.
The integration of the development into its setting was a key consideration for Stockwool; the development provides new homes but also relates to its setting and brings wider benefits. Urban blocks provide a degree of permeability through the site, with low-key mews spaces connecting to the main road.
