This mixed use scheme encompasses a GP surgery, pharmacy, ICT training centre, community hall, senior citizens community facilities, café, local authority offices and after school club as well as 32 new homes. The design was informed through extensive consultation with local residents inputting on everything from the activities the building could offer to the design of a secure, central courtyard which provides a valuable amenity space, making this a true community building and ensuring that the local community feels a real sense of ownership.
A number of sustainable features were incorporated into the design, including passive ventilation drawing cool air from the northern garden side of the building through to the five chimneys on the Union Road elevation; cedar louvres reduce glare and solar gain; and an extensive green roof.
The building is light, airy and easy to negotiate and as a public building it has street presence without dominating the environment. The public façades are solid and robust, clad in render and cedar and contrast with the predominant local brickwork. Meanwhile, the glazed foyer provides a visual and physical link to the interior, drawing passers-by into the garden beyond and reinforcing the sense of community that local residents requested from the outset.
