This compelling scheme for the Unite Group provides 87 student apartments together with a site office, communal lounge, and laundry room as well as a courtyard garden.
Situated opposite the amenity of Clissold Park in Islington, the scheme is set on a 0.15 hectare site and comprises three elements: two buildings hinged around a vertical circulation core. A ‘heavy’ structure, developed as an interpretation of a Victorian villa, sits into the ground and is made up of studio rooms at all levels; whilst a ‘light’ third form, enveloped in a woven steel mesh, responds to the weave of the surrounding treescape and floats over a series of entrance and communal spaces at ground level providing a heart for the complex. The impact of the landscape continues to wrap up and onto the building as the green patterning folds onto the roof of the block where sedum provides a green roofscape.
